Fair Tech Policy Lab

Founder & Director

A global think tank bridging AI ethics and public policy.

Our mission is to make algorithmic fairness accessible through research, public engagement, and policy innovation.

  • Partnered with the UN’s AI for Good Young AI Leaders.

  • Launched the Fair Tech Policy Proposal Challenge, crowdsourcing 50+ high-quality AI policy proposals, inviting participatory policymaking

  • Assembled a team of 11+ across 7 countries through pitching on social media. Some of our team include researchers affiliated with institutions such as Peking University, London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), Sciences Po Paris, University of Michigan, Microsoft Research, Brookings Institution, and Global AI Governance Research Lab.

Current Project: AI Model Ethics Evaluation Toolkit

  • Developed in collaboration with our members Jingru Zheng (MA, LSE AI ethics specialist), Monroe Zhang (Sciences Po–trained energy transition and policy specialist), Koki Deng (AI governance and technology law consultant), and Jinwu Xiang (Peking University digital humanities researcher).

  • I co-lead a project to build a reusable and transparent framework for evaluating the ethics of large AI models.

  • The project draws on global standards and guidelines, from international regulations to industry white papers, to make sure our evaluations are both rigorous and globally relevant.

  • We’re developing a three-level indicator system that breaks down what “ethical performance” really means in practice. For each indicator, we design clear, evidence-based evaluation methods and refine them through continuous testing and validation, ensuring the results are both reliable and easy to interpret.

Raising Awearness Campaign (RAC)
Co-Founder & Director

A youth-led sustainable fashion and social enterprise that transforms design into activism.

We create 100% eco-friendly T-shirts, tote bags, and bracelets featuring bold, socially conscious designs under themes like “Coded Inequality.”

In a survey we conducted with 81 teenagers, where 55% felt their attempts to raise awareness were ineffective and 71% believed they made little to no impact.

Founded in the summer of 2023, RAC began as five teenagers spotting a problem - youth lack a convenient avenue for activism. We therefore aimed to bridge slow fashion with social activism.

RAC operates on a decentralized model where our members organize events and sales from across 6+ countries. Together, we’ve sold 450+ products, raised over $6k for nonprofits like the Sacred Hearts Foundation and the Association for India’s Development (AID), and built partnerships with Chipotle and Krispy Kreme.

At its heart, RAC challenges the economic “race to the bottom” that fuels global inequality. Instead, we use sustainability and storytelling to prove that commerce and conscience can coexist.

VANTAGE
Academic Liberal Arts Magazine

            Co-Founder & Editor in Chief

  • I co-founded Vantage, a student-led academic magazine, to create an intellectual space at our school where diverse perspectives could be exchanged and expressed.

  • Our 14-member team published two issues featuring 38 articles totaling over 42,000 words, reaching 1,300+ readers. We secured school funding to print 65 physical copies, and our principal also contributed as a writer.

  • The magazine was featured multiple times in the school bulletin, senior outreach, and social media accounts

  • Deputy Principal (who has been at Benenden for 12 years) described it as “the best publication I’ve seen during my time here.”

We and AI Research

images.png
  • A research project on youth perspective on AI chatbots, working with a group of postgraduate researchers, including Tania Duarte (Founder of We and AI, Editorial Board, AI & Ethics; IEEE P7015 definitions lead) and Lizzie Remfry (PHD, We and Al Lead Researcher)

  • The project examines how design assumptions map to youth expectations, and how mismatches shape user trust, engagement, and perceptions of agency.

  • This work is currently being prepared for submission to the ACM Conference on Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency (FAccT), where I will present the findings.

  • Designed & conducted 15 youth interviews

  • Performed thematic analysis & manual coding of interview transcripts

  • Collaborated with other researchers to discuss insights and plan the discussion section of the paper

  • Introduced a sentiment analysis machine learning methodology to computationally analyze interviewee emotions, adding a new computational social science perspective to the discussion section of the paper.

  • Delivered a one-hour seminar on computational social science methodology to the We and AI research team, inspiring them to revise their research policy

WinLearn Tutoring Organization

A tutoring nonprofit born from the belief that education can change lives.

In my hometown of Dingan, located in rural southern China, I help a class of over 30 students from primary to secondary school who lack sufficient English learning resources.

We hold regular weekly online lessons that students are always enthusiastic to attend. In the summer of 2024, I also organized a two-week summer camp to engage students in fun, interactive English learning beyond the traditional Chinese syllabus.

During the camp, I introduced them to the use of AI tools, helping them understand how to use Chinese AI platforms to support their studies; such as generating exams, creating revision questions, self-testing, and practicing English through conversation with AI.
